One of the great joys and strengths of University Christian Church is Music Ministry. Blessed with a sanctuary that is not only beautiful but also acoustically exceptional, the music of UCC has always been a strong and vital component of our worship experience.
Our Chancel Choir sings weekly in worship and at special services during the year. The choir offers a wide variety of music, ranging from major works with orchestra to contemporary anthems. In 2010, UCC presented the world premiere of On Christmas Night, a work commissioned from composer Bob Chilcott, who came to Austin and conducted the premiere performances. Mr. Chilcott’s choral compositions join those of composers from Mozart to Mendelssohn to Rutter to Hogan in the Chancel Choir’s repertoire. Membership in the Chancel Choir is open to all who wish to participate, and an audition is not required. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Our Handbell Choir rings arrangements of beloved hymns and plays both separately and with the choir. As with the Chancel Choir, membership is open to all with no audition required, and rehearsals are at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
UCC is fortunate to have two beautiful instruments to enhance the worship experience: a Steinway concert grand piano and an 1800-pipe, 32-rank organ built by the Garland Organ Company of Fort Worth. The organ is played from a three-manual console and is comprised of great, swell, and pedal divisions. Whether played alone or in accompaniment to a soloist or the choir, these fine instruments provide glorious affirmation of the power of sacred music to bring us into God’s presence.
